Oil analysis is essentially a blood test for your engine. The laboratory measures the concentration of wear metals like iron, copper, chromium, and aluminum — each of which comes from specific engine components. Elevated iron indicates excessive ring or cylinder wear. High copper can signal bearing wear or a cooling system issue. Abnormal silicon often indicates dirt ingestion from a compromised air filter. Silicon can also come from RTV sealant, which may indicate recent repairs.
